ASAAD AL ARID | SALIM
Assad was born in Damascus, Syria and is now residing in Vancouver. He is interested in painting, music and acting. He lives with his family in Surrey BC and is the top on his English class.
SALAM ALMARZOUQ | LEILA
Before arriving to Surrey BC, Salam lived in Mafraq, Jordan. She loves Syrian TV shows. Salam surprised everyone with an emotionally powerful performance inspired by her lived experience.
HUSSEIN AL AHMAD | YOUSEF
Hussein lived in Raqqa, Syria before moving to Surrey BC. After working on Rupture, he started experimenting in making his own short films with friends and wants to become a director.
WAZIRA AL AHMAD | NOOR
Born in Raqqa, Syria, Wazira is the youngest of the cast. She loves Bollywood films and Arabic music, which she infused into her first acting experience on Rupture.
YASSMINA KARAJAH | WRITER AND DIRECTOR
Yassmina Karajah is a Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker residing in Canada. She is an alumna of the University of Bristol Law School and a graduate of Film Production from the University of British Columbia. Her short film, Light (2014), was selected to screen at TIFF, AFI Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival, and the Melbourne International Film Festival, and was part of Telefilm Canada's Not Short on Talent selection at Berlinale '15, where she was named one of Ten Canadians to Watch. Karajah creates character-driven films that challenge dominant social narratives and explore diasporic voices and stories . She is a recent graduate of the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors' Lab and is currently developing her first feature film.
DAVID FINDLAY | PRODUCER
Born and raised in Quebec City, David Findlay is a Film Studies and Film Production graduate of the University of British Columbia. As a director, his short films (Callback, Nephew, Face it) have screened in festivals worldwide including Warsaw, Vancouver and Regard sur le Court, among others. He is currently in post-production on his feature film debut Everything Outside starring Louise Portal, Ahmed Muslimani and Kati Outinen. Rupture is David’s second collaboration as a producer with Yassmina after 2014’s Light.
LEEN ISSA | CO PRODUCER AND CASTING DIRECTOR
Leen is a Palestinian-Syrian graduate from the Film Production program at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She specialized in Film Editing while experimenting with various departments including Directing, Producing, and Camera. Her thesis film, Normies (2015) was nominated for the Best Escapism Movie Award at TBUFF and screened at Speechless Film Festival. Leen went on to direct her second short film, Deuteronomy 24:16 (2016) which was nominated for Best Direction and Best Picture at the Leo Awards. She currently works as a Video Editor and is in the process of writing her next short film.
VIRGINIE NOLIN | CO PRODUCER
Virginie is an emerging producer based in Montreal and is a Film Production graduate of the Concordia University. Throughout the last three years, she produced 5 short films. In 2016, she presented her films ( Wild Child, Clowning Around, Scrap) at Cannes for a third year in a row in the Telefilm Canada selection, Not Short On Talent. She is now working on the development of features. Virginie makes films from gut instinct in close collaboration with the creators and with a strong intention to explore and refine storytelling.
BLAKE DAVEY | DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND EDITOR
Blake (Big Brother, The Meltdown, Everything Outside) is a graduate from the Film Production program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a cinematographer currently based out of Vancouver, BC. As of late he has travelled abroad for commercial work in places such as Ireland, Tokyo, Guatemala, and the North West Territories. His cinematography is recognized for being expressive, vibrant and energetic.
SOPHIE JARVIS | PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Sophie Jarvis is a founding member of Two Scenography, a production design partnership that has studios in Vancouver and Toronto. She is an alumna of the prestigious Berlinale Talents program, where she trained with the world-renowned designer Alex McDowell. In addition to Rupture, Sophie production designed two Canadian feature films premiering at TIFF: (Never Steady, never Still and Luk’luk'i).
